The auto-pilot feature allows you to complete your purchase without needing to manually submit payment. Auto-pilot is active by default for many, but not all, Pay By Group merchants.
If auto-pilot is active for your group:
- The auto-pilot drop-down selector in the Organizer Controls bar will be set to “ON”
- Pay By Group will automatically charge your group members’ credit cards for their shares after the necessary number of people have joined
- You can disable auto-pilot for purchases where it has been activated by default
- The default auto-pilot trigger level for evenly-split purchases is the same as the group’s tipping point. However, you can set it to a higher value if your group's final size isn't certain and you want flexibility (described in greater detail below)
If you don’t use the auto-pilot feature, you will have to come back to your Pay By Group dashboard to manually submit payment to trigger these charges. You can read more about sending a group payment in this article.
If your Pay By Group includes installments, using auto-pilot will trigger the first payment as soon as the necessary number of people have joined the group. After that, each payment will automatically be charged just prior to its respective due date.
To set up auto-pilot for groups where it is not active by default, click the “Auto-pilot” drop-down button in the Organizer Controls bar at the top of the screen. Select “On” and a window will pop up where you can decide how many people need to join the group for the purchase to be made automatically.
This value will default to your group’s tipping point (i.e. the minimum number of people that must join the group in order for the purchase to be made), but you can choose a higher number than that if you want to allow more people to join than just the minimum required amount before payment is triggered. Choosing and editing how many people need to join the group for the purchase to be made automatically only applies to evenly-split purchases; for custom-split purchases the auto-pilot trigger amount is fixed at the full purchase amount.
You’ll see a visual depiction of the expected breakdown of the purchase in this window, which will update depending on what number of people you choose as your auto-pilot trigger (for evenly-split purchases), or how many people you've invited to and/or how many people have joined your group (for custom-split purchases).
When you’re ready, click the “Activate auto-pilot” button to close the window and turn auto-pilot on. The number of slots you set as the trigger for auto-pilot must be equal to or greater than the minimum size you set for the group and the current number of slots claimed in the group across all group members.
If you have an evenly-split purchase and want to edit your auto-pilot threshold, click the "Auto-pilot" drop-down button in Organizer Controls and select "Edit" to open the auto-pilot window. Make your desired changes and click the “Activate auto-pilot” button to close the window and update the auto-pilot settings.
If auto-pilot is active for your group and you want to turn it off, click the "Auto-pilot" drop-down button and select the "Off" option. A dashboard alert will warn you that you will have to come back to your Pay By Group dashboard to manually trigger and submit payment.
